One of the biggest challenges I have encountered has been troubleshooting engineering documentation when the design, drawing, or build process did not align with the actual hardware requirements. These situations require more than just identifying a mistake—they require understanding the intent behind the design, analyzing the available information, and communicating effectively with engineering.

When I encounter an issue, I approach it methodically. I review the documentation, analyze the potential causes, and consider factors such as wire gauge requirements, termination methods, splicing techniques, mechanical fit, and manufacturing processes. Once I understand the problem, I communicate my findings to the responsible engineer and provide possible solutions or recommendations based on my experience on the manufacturing floor.

One thing I have learned is that troubleshooting is a collaborative process. Technicians often have the hands-on perspective that helps identify issues early, while engineers provide the design intent. Effective communication between both sides is what allows problems to be resolved efficiently.

I also make a point to document issues, solutions, and lessons learned so that errors can be prevented in future builds. These experiences have strengthened my technical knowledge, attention to detail, and confidence in addressing challenges. I enjoy being in environments where I can continue learning, contribute ideas, and help improve the overall quality of the product being built.

My transition into engineering wasn't traditional, but it's something I'm very proud of.

In 2018, I had the opportunity to join Lockheed Martin's AMTAP technician apprenticeship. That experience introduced me to electrical and mechanical engineering and confirmed that this was the career I wanted to pursue. Although I wasn't able to complete the program at that time, it gave me a clear direction and motivated me to keep working toward that goal.

When the pandemic began in 2020, I decided to use that time to invest in myself instead of putting my career on hold. I enrolled at Black Fox Training and paid for my IPC certifications myself, earning J-STD-001, IPC-7711/7721, and J-STD-001 Space. Those certifications became the foundation that allowed me to break into the aerospace industry.

From there, I intentionally sought contract positions that would expose me to as many different manufacturing processes as possible. In just a couple of years, I transitioned from being a mathematics teacher's assistant to working as a cable and harness technician in the aerospace and defense industry. Every contract taught me something new—whether it was harness assembly, PCB rework, control panel wiring, inventory management, firmware flashing, or quality inspection.

Looking back, I'm grateful that my path wasn't straightforward because it forced me to become adaptable, resourceful, and committed to continuous learning. Today, I see myself as someone who can quickly master new skills, contribute in unfamiliar environments, and continue growing with every opportunity. That's exactly what I'm looking for in my next role—a place where I can keep learning, take on new challenges, and make a meaningful contribution.
